Innovative Pesticide-Free Weed Control strategy in Cereal and Grain legume sowings

Project leader: Dr. agr. Līvija Zariņa

The type of the project: EAFRD (European agricultural fund for rural development) http://ec.europa.eu/agriculture/rural-development-2014-2020/index_lv.htm

Project duration: 2020 – 2023
The aim of this tresearch is to study the effectiveness of an innovative weed control method in Latvian conditions and to develop effective weed control technologies in cereals and legumes (peas / field beans). To find out the advantages and disadvantages of the new technology, to evaluate its economic and ecological aspects.

Summary:
Grain production is one of the main industries in Latvia, so it is important to improve their cultivation technologies at such a level as to ensure good results not only in high yields, but also to have less negative impact on the environment. Herbicides are widely used, so in addition to the presence of pesticides, biodiversity in those fields is declining, thus negatively affecting other ecosystem cenoses. On the other hand, practicing the biological method, practitioners fail to successfully combine sowing care with a guaranteed weed control effect, as a result of which the yields are low and often oversaturated with weed seeds. These problems are relevant in many countries, so opportunities are constantly being sought to solve them. The new technology is based on precise technology. Using it, it is possible to fix crop rows, thus allowing selective control of weeds. Usually in Latvia cereals are grown with a row spacing of 12.5 cm, but the increase in row spacing makes it possible to take care of the inter-row sowing of plants.
